Data Collection

Data Collection for Case Studies, National Surveys, and DREAM 2013–2014

There are three main areas of research for the current academic year. First, we will be conducting case studies with teachers and students in Montreal, Sherbrooke, Kingston, Ajax, and Toronto. These teachers and their students will be using iSCORE with piano, guitar, violin, clarinet, and voice students of all ages.

To learn about their experiences we are gathering information from students, teachers, and parents. Some of this information will be gathered with surveys. Our research team will also enjoy the privilege of observing students as they interact with their teachers during their lessons and interviewing both the students and their teachers.

A second major thrust for our 2013–2014 research involves national surveys of teachers, parents, and students. We will be seeking the assistance of various music schools and conservatories, summer camps to distribute these surveys. And we’ll use social media as well, to reach as many students as possible!

The final form of data collection for 2013-2014 involves the beta testing for DREAM, scheduled for release in August 2014.

 Data Collection 2012–2013

During the 2012–2013 academic year, we will be learning how iSCORE is used by music teachers throughout the GTA. These teachers—with varied backgrounds and many years of teaching experience—are using iSCORE with piano, guitar, strings, and voice students of all ages.

To learn about their experiences, and to compare them with students who are not using iSCORE, we are gathering information from students, teachers, and parents. Some of this information will be gathered with surveys developed at Concordia (TLSQ & SLSQ). Our research team will also enjoy the privilege of observing students as they interact with their teachers during their lessons and interviewing both the students and their teachers.
