Data Collection

Data Collection for Case Studies, National Surveys, and DREAM 2012–2016

IMG_20130705_131549We have employed a variety of ways of collecting data for the Music Tool Suite project. First, conducted case studies with teachers and students in Montreal, Sherbrooke, Kingston, Ajax, and Toronto. These teachers and their students used the first tool we developed, called iSCORE ,with piano, guitar, violin, clarinet, and voice students of all ages.

To learn about their experiences we gathered information from students, teachers, and parents. Some of this information will be gathered with surveys. Our research team  also enjoyed the privilege of observing students as they interacted with their teachers during their lessons and subsequently interviewed both the students and their teachers.

A second major thrust for our research involved national surveys and international surveys of teachers, parents, and students. We sought the assistance of various music schools, conservatories, and summer camps to distribute these surveys. We used social media as well, to reach as many students as possible!

Throughout the project various questionnaires and small scale case studies were used to beta test and field test the remaining three tools in the Music Tool Suite: DREAM, Notemaker, and Cadenza.

 Data Collection 2012–2013

iSCORE studentDuring the 2012–2013 academic year, we learned how iSCORE was used by music teachers throughout the GTA and in Sherbrooke, Québec. These teachers—with varied backgrounds and many years of teaching experience—used iSCORE with piano, guitar, clarinet, strings, and voice students of all ages.

To learn about their experiences, and to compare them with students who are not using iSCORE, we gathered information from students, teachers, and parents. Some of this information was gathered with surveys developed at Concordia (TLSQ & SLSQ). Our research team also observed students during their lessons.
